Volume 92: Steve Deangelo, Father of the Legal Cannabis Industry

Steve Deangelo joins us the day after 420 to talk to us about life, music and cannabis!

For those of you who follow Cait on social media, you may have seen these two hanging out in Saint John, Toronto and California together, working on projects, and it has been a long time since we got Steve on our show!

In this episode, we talk about Steve’s early experiences with music and how it influenced him and many others to push for change during the anti-war movement in the United States throughout the 1960s and ’70s.

We also dive into the deep, rich history between music and cannabis worldwide and the role music plays today in advocating for legalization worldwide.

Steve also tells us about some of his favourite music memories, what he’s been listening to lately, and so much more on this episode of Strange Grooves!

A Little bit about Steve:

Steve DeAngelo is a globally recognized cannabis leader who was dubbed “the father of the legal industry.” As a lifelong activist, author, educator, investor, and entrepreneur, he has spent more than four decades on the front lines of the cannabis reform movement. His most notable business achievements include co-founding Harborside-one of the first six dispensaries licensed in the United States-now, a publicly traded company on the Canadian Securities Exchange; Steep Hill Laboratory, the first cannabis analytics company; Arcview Group, the first dedicated cannabis investment network; and Last Prisoner Project, dedicated to fighting criminal injustice and reimagining drug policy.

Steve is the author of The Cannabis Manifesto and an originator of the wellness approach to understanding cannabis. He played a key role in the passage of Initiative 59, Washington DC’s medical cannabis law; the passage of Prop 64, California’s adult-use law; and successfully defended multiple legal attempts by US federal authorities to shutter the doors of Harborside.

Steve also worked with Discovery Channel on a mini-series called Weed Wars. He also currently has a show on Greenflower Media and a podcast called Radio Free Cannabis that brings people from different backgrounds and places together to find new ways and perspectives around Cannabis.

Steve lives in California with three dogs, three cats, and his lovely partner, Yolanda. He is currently travelling, and we urge you to go on the road with him and take your cannabis learning to the next level.

We want to say thank you for joining us on this special episode with Steve. We take pride in our show and the guests and the stories that are shared here. We encourage you to dive into the work Steve and his partners do. A lot of these photos and his videos are done by the incredibly talented Giacobazzi Yanez. Thanks, everyone for supporting our show!

Until next time, Keep it strange,

xox Cait and Cherise.
